Jimmy P. Ferris Family Ring Scholarship

James Paul “Jim” Ferris earned his Bachelor of Arts in Teaching from Sam Houston State University in 1969 and was deeply involved in campus life, serving as head cheerleader, senior class president, and a member of Sigma Chi. As part of the last class to graduate from Sam Houston State College and the first from Sam Houston State University, he uniquely received two diplomas. After beginning his career as a high school teacher, Jim joined Wismer Distributing in Baytown, Texas, where he advanced from washing trucks to general manager. Under his leadership, the company grew from 120,000 annual cases to more than 5 million and expanded from eight employees to over 200. Known for his humility, optimism, and commitment to treating others with respect, Jim has earned admiration throughout his career and community service. He was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Sam Houston State University in 2011 and was inducted into the Department of Engineering Technology’s Wall of Honor in 2024. A Life Endowed Member of the SHSU Alumni Association, Jim resides in Baytown with his wife, Tonya, and takes pride in his family’s strong Sam Houston legacy.
