Anne Gibbs Endowed Scholarship

The Anne Gibbs Endowed Scholarship was established by Ferne S. Frosch, Trustee of the W.S. Gibbs Family Trusts of Huntsville, Texas, in memory of Anne Nugent Gibbs and W.S. Gibbs Sr., and in honor of W.S. Gibbs Jr.

Anne Nugent married Wilbourn Sanford Gibbs at the Methodist Church in Jackson, Mississippi, on June 26, 1900. The couple had three sons, although two died in infancy. Their surviving son, Wilbourn Sanford “W.S.” Gibbs Jr., was born in 1909.

Following the death of his father, Wilbourn Sanford Gibbs and his brother, Thomas Gibbs, assumed responsibility for managing the family’s business interests. Their enterprise evolved into Gibbs Brothers & Company, which remains in operation in Huntsville, Texas, on its original site.

W.S. Gibbs Jr. was a graduate of Lawrenceville School and attended Princeton University before graduating from The University of Texas, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. Throughout his life, he made significant contributions to the City of Huntsville, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville Memorial Hospital, and numerous other civic and educational institutions.
