Marcella Schomburg-Koy Endowed Scholarship for Osteopathic Medicine

Marcella Schomburg-Koy and her former husband, Wayne Schomburg, are graduates of Sam Houston State University. Marcella pursued a career as a high school English teacher, while Wayne became a banker. Before Wayne’s death in 2017, both were actively involved with Bellville General Hospital. Wayne served in financial leadership roles on several hospital-related boards, while Marcella served on the foundation board. Through their service, they gained a deep appreciation for the vital role a small community hospital plays and the many challenges it faced in providing outstanding healthcare services while attracting and retaining quality physicians, nurses, and staff. In 2022, Marcella was blessed to marry Ernie Koy Jr. Following his distinguished football career with the University of Texas and the New York Giants, Ernie became a coach at Sam Houston State University and has maintained strong ties to the university’s Athletic Department. Together, Marcella and Ernie share a commitment to supporting Sam Houston State University and the students who choose to attend the institution. To further that commitment, they established this scholarship, which benefits students enrolled in Sam Houston’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. Recognizing the critical need for healthcare providers, particularly in rural communities, they hope scholarship recipients will consider serving these underserved areas upon graduation and help address the growing demand for quality medical care.
