Dr. Andrew A. Dewees Undergraduate Research Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established by Andrew A. Dewees in appreciation for having the privilege of serving for 37 years in the Biology Department at Sam Houston State University. Dewees was born in and raised in Herrin, Illinois, and began his career in the biological sciences at Southern Illinois University, where he obtained the B.A. (1961) and MA. (1963) degrees in Zoology. He completed the Ph. D. in Genetics and Statistics at Purdue University in 1967. Dewees joined the Department of Biology at Sam Houston State College in 1967 as an assistant professor and taught courses in Genetics and Biostatistics to undergraduates and graduate students. He taught the required undergraduate Genetics course every semester for 34 years and introduced students to Statistics in his Biostatistics course. Dewees directed thesis research in genetics for 12 students receiving the M A. degree in Biology and published scholarly articles in the journal Genetics and the Journal of Heredity. He served as statistical consultant for the Department students and faculty in support of their research projects. Dewees served as the Chair of the Biology Department from 1984 to 1999. He was active in student advisement and enjoyed seeing students progress in their academic programs and succeed in their chosen profession.
