Phyllis and Walter Pinegar Best and Brightest Endowed Scholarship

Phyllis and Walt Pinegar are loyal supporters of Sam Houston State University. The couple met at Sam Houston while Phyllis was studying Business, and Walt was studying Criminal Justice. The Pinegars have attended many SHSU Events and supported SHSU programs financially, since the early 1970’s. Their generosity has been spread across many SHSU programs. After serving in the United States Navy, Walt earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice in 1972, and a Master of Art in Criminal Justice in 1977. Walt retired from Walker County after serving 20 years as an Investigator for the District Attorney’s Office. Phyllis was born in Huntsville at the old wood hospital and is the oldest child of James and Rosella Scott. Phyllis and her younger brother Jimmy graduated from Huntsville High School in 1962. She attended Kilgore Community College before graduating from Sam Houston University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration. After earning her degree, Phyllis worked in Houston before being hired as a legal secretary at Walker County Title. She later went to work at the Texas Department of Corrections in the Executive Director’s office as an Administrative Assistant and Retired as a Legal Administrator after 28 years with the Department.
