Harry Fishburne Estill Presidential Endowed Scholarship

The Harry Fishburne Estill Presidential Endowed Scholarship was established by Robert E. Estill of Houston, Texas. Harry F. Estill was born on August 12, 1861, in Lexington, Virginia. He was the fifth president of Sam Houston State University. He was a graduate of Sam Houston Normal Institute’s first class in 1880, and later, at age 22, succeeded his father, Charles P. Estill, teaching Latin and English there at his alma mater. After serving in other administrative roles, he served as president for 29 years (1908-1937) and is its longest serving president. Harry F. Estill and his family have been a supporter of education for students at Sam Houston State University. Robert graduated from Rice University with a degree in Accounting and Economics in 1961. He worked for American General Insurance Company for several years and then decided to attend graduate school at Sam Houston State University. He chose Sam Houston State because it offered me the chance to receive a quality education along with the opportunity to become involved in extra-curricular activities. He graduated in 1966 after having earned a master’s degree in Business Administration. Subsequently, he had a long career as a Revenue Agent with the IRS.
