T. J. Butler Scholarship in Memory of Claude McLeod

The T.J. Butler Scholarship in Memory of Claude McLeod was established by Thomas J. butler of Houston Texas. Claude A. McLeod from Grapeland, Texas, was born on December 24, 1911. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in vocational agriculture from Sam Houston State University in 1938 and a master’s degree in biology in 1947. He published many articles in Texas scientific magazines on his biological work. Claude served as a professor of biology at Sam Houston State University from 1949-1979. During his time at Sam Houston, he was not only a teacher but a mentor and friend to so many and was committed to education, science, and the environment. T.J. attended Sam Houston State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in photography with a minor in biology in 1976. T.J. has many fond memories of his biology professor Claude McLeod, who was a great inspiration to him. T.J. recalls Professor McLeod mentoring and helping him learn botany, especially plant identification which was a passion of Professor McLeod.
