R. W. Gordy Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The R. W. Gordy Memorial Scholarship was established by Russell D. and Glenda J. Gordy in memory of R. W. Gordy, father of Russell Gordy, who served as a law enforcement officer with the Houston Police Department until his death in 1970. Born in the small town of Slagle, Louisiana on October 7, 1921, Mr. Gordy left his humble beginnings in 1938 to enlist in the Army Air Corp and fight in the European theater of World War 11 until 1945. After his service in the military, Mr. Gordy joined the Houston Police Department where he served as a law enforcement officer until his death in 1970. With this agreement the Donors recognize the hard work and dedication of those that elect to become law enforcement officers and to express their appreciation for the many sacrifices that law enforcement personnel must make in their lives to serve others. Because of the stress associated with working and going to school, the Donors want to make available funds for scholarships so that deserving students will be able to focus more on their studies and not have the distraction of worrying about how to pay for school.
