Leo Stringer Memorial Endowed Scholarship

At his graduation from Jasper High School it was announced that Lee had been awarded two scholarships for college, one of which was from the Ex-Students Association at Sam Houston State. These scholarships were critical to Lee’s affording college. The Sam Houston scholarship greatly influenced his choice of schools and for that he has been grateful over the years. He feels that he was blessed by attending Sam Houston. He also has always been grateful that there were people that had the kindness to fund scholarships for him when he needed it the most.Lee’s father, Leo Stringer, grew up in a rural area of western Louisiana where they offered only seven years of school and lee felt that not having a high school education severely handicapped him in life. Further complicating his life, he came of age just as the Great Depression settled across the country. Financially he never shared in the recovery so there was no money available to help Lee with college. But one thing that they did do was to imbue Lee beginning at an early age with the understanding that getting a good education was worth working to overcome any obstacle no matter how difficult that might be. To honor the direction that he gave to Lee the scholarships given from this endowment will be known as the Leo Stringer Memorial Scholarship
