Huntsville Study Club Endowed Scholarship

Around a kitchen table in the summer of 1950, a small group of women, feeling the need for companionship and intellectual stimulation, decided to organize a club. Throughout the years the members have been dedicated to community philanthropic projects. The first money raising project, an antique show, was organized to improve the Steamboat House on the grounds of the Sam Houston Museum. Other civic contributions/fundraisers include A Tour of Homes, Trash and Treasure Sales, A Patriotic Texas Pageant, spring luncheons/style shows, Spaghetti Suppers, Chili Suppers, and Tasting Bees (with accompanying original cookbooks: Study Club Cookbooks in 1973, 1977, and 1992.) Funds were dedicated to an annual scholarship that would enable a Walker County graduate to attend Sam Houston State University. After presentations of scholarships over the years, in 1986 an endowment was established with the University to ensure the continuation of the scholarship. The Huntsville Study Club continues to meet monthly with programs on intellectually stimulating topics.
