Musicoterapia Scholarship

The Musicoterapia Scholarship is being established by Christy Merrell Music Therapy, a St. Louis, Missouri based practice to increase the number of Spanish speaking (and singing!) music therapists who are passionate about working with Migrant youth who are beginning their healing journey in the US. In 2021 Christy Merrell, MI-BC answered the call to help a non-profit social service agency start the first music therapy program at a Texas facility serving unaccompanied immigrant youth from Central America. Sam Houston State University’s Music Therapy director and alumni played a critical role in the development of the program. Of the 17 music therapists who worked at the site five (and two of the three long-term therapists onsite) were alumni from Sam Houston State University! They are proud of the SHSU alumni and want to honor their passion and commitment to helping migrant youth by encouraging and supporting other bilingual students to become music therapists.
