Oscar Lee "Corky" Thorne, Jr. Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established in memory of the Donor’s son, Oscar Lee “Corky” Thorne, Jr., to provide financial assistance to selected students. Corky was born August 17, 1947 to Oscar Lee Thorne. Sr. and Bonnie Baker Thorne, their only child He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Teaching in 1970 at Sam Houston State University with a major in Elementary Education. Corky married Leslie A. Moore. Leslie earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1969 and her Masters in Education in 1972. Corky went on to Leach in Spring I.SD. and Madisonville ISD. Corky lost his life in an accident with a bull at the Madisonville Auction Barn when he was twenty-five. He loved working with students. He exemplified strong Christian ethics and principles. He loved life and helping others. Bonnie was born in 1928 in Houston, and was raised there. In 1945, she went to Lon Morris College. and she and Oscar were married the next year. She earned her associate degr1te from Lon Morris in Jacksonville, Texas. Bonnie began working in the Sam Houston State Teachers College Registrar’s Office in 1956 and earned her Bachelor’s in 1960. In 1961 she began working in the Sam Houston Slate University library. She retired from SHSU in 1993, when she was 65, but stayed on as an adjunct until 2002.
