Gordon Brown Endowed Scholarship

Following graduation from Groesbeck High School, Gordon Brown, who had lettered in all GHS sports, was recruited, and awarded a scholarship to play football at Sam Houston State University by Coach T.H. “Puny” Wilson. Gordon lettered as SHSU quarterback every year until his graduation, at which time he began a 36-year career in education as a coach and teacher and, later, as an administrator. Shortly after receiving his bachelor’s degree, he returned to SHSU and completed his master’s degree. His record as a coach was highlighted by a 15-0 Katy High School Tiger State Championship before he moved into school administration. He retired from education after serving nine years as Superintendent of the Katy Independent School District. Gordon was a recipient of the SHSU Distinguished Service Award in 2010 and pointed out in his acceptance speech that he wasn’t sure how he would have attended college if it hadn’t been for his football scholarship. This scholarship was established in honor of Gordon Brown.
