Helen Caldwell Holm Education Endowed Scholarship

Helen Caldwell Holm grew up in Freeport, Texas and attended Freeport High School. She met George Holm in April 1942 before graduating from Sam Houston State University in the summer with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. They married in the same year. George Holm attended Texas A&M University. He was automatically made a 1st Lieutenant in the Army upon graduation from college. They lived in San Antonio at Fort Sam Houston, followed by several moves until George was deployed to Europe in 1944. Their Annadele, was born in 1944, followed by Mary Lynne in 1948. After WWII the family moved to Houston. George was in the oil service business and Helen was a housewife and mother. According to Helen her student years at Sam Houston State Teachers College were some of the happiest of her life and she felt that she grew up at Sam Houston. Helen said the degree she received in Elementary, Education made her proud. She was convinced a child’s first years in school were the most important and wanted her gift to the university to benefit students in the form of scholarships in Elementary Education. She was a century club member of the Alumni Association from 1998 until 2006, when she upgraded her membership to lifetime member status. Helen passed away at her home in San Antonio in the summer of 2010.
