Koy Family Scholarship

Ernest Anyz Koy received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Sam Houston State University in 1938. He attended the University of Texas from 1929-1933 and was three-time All Conference in football and baseball. After the season in 1933, he signed ·with the New York Yankees to play baseball in their minor league system. He was later traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1938. after the baseball season. he joined Sam Houston Coach Molly Crawford as a graduate assistant to help with the football and baseball programs and worked on his BS degree. He returned to the Major League and played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds. and the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1942 he left for the Navy and served as an officer in World War II. He played in the first night game held at Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field in 1938. The next year he played in the first televised Major League Baseball game. Throughout Ernie’s career, his wife of 71 years, Jane Moore Cameron Koy, shared raising their family and supporting them in their athletic and academic endeavors.

Ernest M Koy, oldest son of Ernest A. Koy, received a Masters of Business Administration degree in 1973 from SHSU. He received his BA from The University of Texas at Austin in 1966. Ernie played on the 1963 National Championship Football team. In 1964, he led the Longhorns to a stunning victory over the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide in the first night Orange Bowl Game. While playing for the New York Giants for six years as a running hack and punter, he was selected us an All-Pro. After retiring from the NFL, he and his wife, Barbara, attended SHSU Ernie was a graduate assistant working with his former high school coach, Allen Boren, who was then head of athletics at SHSU

Barbara Gustafson Koy completed a Bachelor of Arts and earned her Texas teacher’s credentials at SHSU in 1973. She had transferred from Queens College of the City University of New York. Her long teaching career includes years both in secondary and early childhood education in both public and private schools in Bellville and Sealy. Ernie and Barbara lived in the athletic dorms, which were then located above the Men’s Gym while Ernie worked on his Master’s Degree. In I 9 7 4 he began a career in banking, which lasted 35 years. Now retired, he and Barbara live on their ranch at the edge of Bellville, Texas.

Robert Cameron Koy, son of Ernest M and Barbara Koy, and grandson of Ernest A. Koy, earned a Masters of Arts in Kinesiology from SHSU in 2001, after earning his Bachelors of Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. He was a quarterback and letterman on the 1999 Longhorns Football team. Robert was a graduate assistant under football coach Ron Randleman while completing his degree.

Barbara Briggs Koy, Robert’s wife, received her Masters Degree in Education and teaching certification at SHSU in 2002, after earning her Bachelor of Arts from The University of Texas at Austin.

Jess Y. Koy, Robert’s youngest brother, earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from SHSU in 2005. Following graduation, he worked as a Business Relationship Manager with Wells Fargo in Houston. Presently, Jess is an officer with the Austin County State Bank in his hometown of Bellville, Texas.
