Judge John P. McAdams, Jr. Memorial Criminal Justice Scholarship

Judge John P. McAdams, Jr. was born in Hobby, Texas August 7, 1934 to Rever Starns McAdams and John P. McAdams, Sr. When he was ten years old his father died, and he immediately went to work to help support his mother and five younger siblings. Judge McAdams learned very early the importance of family obligations. Graduating from East Chambers High School, Judge McAdams attended John Tarleton State College majoring in Animal Science, and minoring in Business Administration. Education was very important to him, therefore Dr. McAdams chose to honor his memory by establishing two scholarships for deserving students at Sam Houston State University. Judge John P. .McAdams, Jr. held the office of Justice of the Peace in Chambers County for twenty-five years. He held this office longer than any other judge in Precinct One at the time of his retirement. They say a man is just a man, but Judge McAdams was a rancher, banker, business owner, Justice of the Peace and most of all a loving husband to Dr. LeBland McAdams for forty-eight years. He was a father figure to many young people in the community, and his family and friends would be the first to describe Judge John P. McAdams, Jr. as a true Texas gentleman that never met a stranger.

LeBland Farris McAdams is establishing two scholarships in memory of her husband Judge John P. McAdams, Jr. They were married for forty-eight years. Dr. McAdams graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1956 with a degree in Home Economics. She taught at Cleveland High School and East Chambers High School for a total of eight years. She completed a Master’s Degree at the University of Houston during that time. Dr. McAdams has a Doctorate of Philosophy Degree from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas . Dr. McAdams returned to Sam Houston State University in 1964 to teach in the Department of Home Economics. She moved to Beaumont, Texas to teach at Lamar University as an Assistant Professor, and retired as a Professor and Dean of the College of Education and Human Development in 1999. Currently, Dr. McAdams resides in Winnie, Texas where she continues to advise students in planning their career and education. She also stays very active in her community and church.
