Slayton Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Barney Deckrow Slayton enlisted in 1906 and retired in 1936. He completed his entire service in one unit, the Second Cavalry Regiment. His combat duty included expedition against hostile Moros near Bud Dajo, Jolo, Philippine Islands (1911), border patrol duty enforcing neutrality laws on the Mexican border (1913), and the Meuse Argonne offensive, France, 1918. After retiring from the U.S. Anny he was employed by Michigan State University as Military Property Custodian in the Military Science Department, reti1ing from that employment in 1956.
His son, Barney Woodrow Slayton, enlisted in 1939. Soon thereafter he was assigned as Assistant Instructor, Military Science Department of Michigan State University. Later, commissioned through Officers Candidate School in 1942, he was assigned combat service in the China Bunna India theatre from 1943 to 1945. He was again assigned combat duty in Korea in 1952. During his career he also served in Germany and Hawaii. He retired in 1959.
LTC Barney F. Slayton, Retired, established this endowed scholarship to honor the memory and the service of this grandfather and father in the U.S. Arn1y. Their service caused and allowed him to be educated al Sam Houston State College. He graduated and was commissioned in 1967. He served in combat in Vietnam, and served in later assignments in Panama and Korea. He continued his scholarly endeavors earning a Master in Arts (Honors, History) from the University of Kansas in 1980 and a Master of Science (Instructional Technology) from the Rochester ll1stitute of Technology in 2003.
