Margaret Powell Scholarship Award

Dr. Virginia Margaret Powell was born September 15, 1903. She received her bachelors from Southern Methodist University and her masters and doctorate degrees from New York University. She joined Sam Houston State University in 1931 and continued working until her retirement in 1974. She was the Chair of the Women’s Physical Education Department from 1945-1966. During her career, Dr. Powell authored a number of publications in the women’s physical education field. She also received several distinguished honors for her work and enthusiasm, including awards from the Texas Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, stale personality for Delta Psi Kappa in 1960 and was honored for outstanding service by the Texas House of Representatives in 1961. This award was created to honor Dr. Powell upon her retirement after 43 years of serving SHSU. It was originally established by gifts from the Senior class, the Women’s Recreation Association (WRA) and the Ex-Student’s Association. Dr. Powell passed away April 27, 1981.
