Robert A. "Bobby" Lane Agricultural Sciences Endowed Scholarship

Bobby lane was born and lived the first 13 years of his life in Mobile, Alabama. It was during this time that Lane became captivated by agriculture on numerous visits to his great-grandfather’s farm in Kinston. Alabama. His family then moved to Nederland, Texas, where he attended Nederland High School. As an active high school 4-H and FFA member, he visited several Texas universities through various youth activities and decided to attend Sam Houston State University for his bachelor of science degree in agricultural education (1977). Having a keen interest in Soil and Crop sciences, Lane then attended Texas A&M University, receiving his Master of Science degree in agronomy in 1980. Lane then accepted an Assistant Professor position teaching agronomy at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. After two years in that position, he was offered a position with his alma mater, Sam Houston State University. He returned and completed the Ph.D. in 1986 at Texas A&M University while holding a full-time teaching appointment al SJ-ISU. Lane has served SHSU for over 34 years. chairing the Department of Agricultural and Industrial Sciences from 1995-2006, and continues to serve as Professor of Plan/ and Soil Sciences. Lane held a variety of leadership positions within his profession. serving as President of the American Association a/State Colleges of Agriculture and Renewable Resources (AASCARRJ, the Agricultural Consortium of Texas, the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Agronomy, and the Walker County Fair Association, among others. He was honored as a Fellow by the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture in 2013 and received the Distinguished Educator Award from the Association of Non-Land Grant Agricultural and Renewable Resources Universities that same year. Among other honors, Lane received the SHSU Excellence in Research Award in 1991, the Alumni Service Award in 2007 and the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2014. Lane and his wife, Pam, have three children, Nathan, Rachel, and Sarah.
