John P. Hughes Memorial Endowed Scholarship

In 2000, Hughes and Friends was created by John P. Hughes (son), his friends and their fathers. They played golf and donated money to the 100 Club. John enjoyed this event as long as he could, until his illness wouldn’t allow it anymore. He passed away on St. Patrick’s Day 2005. Hughes and Friends changed its cause from the 100 Club to the newly founded John P. Hughes Memorial Scholarship fund in 2005. The first tournament under the new beneficiary was November 11, 2006, John’s birthday. Over $20,000 has been donated by Hughes and Friends to Lone Star College over the last 6 years, achieving endowment status last year, which will fund a $1,000 scholarship in perpetuity. It is the intention of the Hughes and Friends to establish an endowment to support an endowed scholarship at SHSU.
