Edwin S. Davis Public Administration Endowed Graduate Scholarship
Dr. Edwin S. Davis began his university teaching career at Sam Houston State University in 1966 with a newly minted Master of Public Administration, among the first degrees in Public Administration awarded in the state of Texas. Dr. Davis taught classes in public policy, organizational theory, research methods, Canadian studies, state and national government, and restorative justice until 2009. He also served as a Visiting Professor in Troy State University’s European Graduate Public Administration Program in 1989-90. As a scholar, he authored two public policy textbooks, co-authored a textbook on Texas politics, and was founding editor of the Texas Journal of Political Studies. Some of the principles that he has conveyed to his students include the idea that government is not the enemy, but is the outcome of the work of citizens; that systems work best when they are built on community and relationships; that an educated and discerning populace who work for the common good is crucial for effective governing; and the belief that all humans are inextricably bound together and influence the common good. Dr. Sharon Lynch, Professor of Special Education, has established this scholarship in honor of her husband, Dr. Edwin S. Davis.
