Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Endowed Scholarship
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship Endowment was established to help students continue their education in agriculture sciences. The Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition was started in 1931 by 7 men with the goal of preserving the cattle industry around the gulf coast area. In 1938, after multiple years of being only a cattle show, the committee added the rodeo, horse show, and downtown parade. In 1957 the rodeo awarded its first educational scholarship of $2,000. In the 1960’s the rodeo changed its name from Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition to Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) while also branding with the bowlegged “H”. During the 60’s they introduced the Art Program. It was within these years the stock show outgrew its location at the Sam Houston Coliseum and moved to the Astrodome. In 2008, the show awarded more than one million to both FFA and 4-H scholarship recipients. The rodeo now welcomes over two million people each year. The participation continues to grow and brings record amounts each year.
