Virginia Irvin Endowed Scholarship
The Virginia Irvin Endowed Scholarship was established in honor of Virginia R. Irvin in 1985 to provide financial assistance to deserving music students at Sam Houston State University. Ms. Irvin entered Sam Houston State Teachers College in the fall of 1941, she received her Bachelor of Art degree in 1945 and her Masters of Art degree in 1947. She began her teaching career at Sam Houston in 1943 as a teaching assistant, where she directed the music department choir in the absence of Charles Lindsay, who was on leave with the wartime USO. She was appointed as Instructor in 1946 and taught at Sam Houston until her retirement. During Ms. Irvin lifetime, she received many honors and awards from around the world. It is the Donor’s intent for the endowment to provide one or more annual scholarship awards to be announced in the spring and disbursed the following academic year, half in the fall and the remaining half in the spring semester. Scholarship awards shall not exceed the earnings of the endowment. This scholarship was established to assist with education expenses.
