Goodson-Coe Endowed Scholarship
This endowment is being established in honor of Michelle Goodson’s mother, Bernice C. Coe, and in appreciation of the significant role Sam Houston State University played in the lives of Jimmy and Michelle Goodson, to provide financial assistance to selected students. Bernice Coe graduated from Sam Houston in 1964. Her college education began al Howard Payne University but was interrupted by World War II and her marriage to Arvard Coe. After completing her degree. she taught English, at Tomball High School for a number of years. She passed away in 2015. Jimmy Goodson received his BA degree from Sam Houston in 1964. He taught history and Spanish at Highlands Junior High for two years and returned to Sam Houston to complete an MA degree, which he received in 1968. During that lime, he was a Graduate Assistant in the Government Department. Michelle Goodson began her association with Sam Houston in 1963 when she became secretary to the Professor of Military Science. She and Jimmy Goodson were married in August 1963. She worked in the Department of
Military Science until Jimmy completed his BA degree in the summer of 1964. When they returned to SHSU in 1966 for him to complete his Master’s degree, they lived in the Gintz Apartments with their baby girl, Kristen While there Michelle attended Sam Houston as a part time student. The Goodsons’ daughter, Meredith, received her teaching credentials from Sam Houston and taught in the Huntsville public schools. Besides their two daughters, the Goodsons have four grandchildren.
