Chief Charles W. Tackett Memorial Scholarship
Charles W. Tackett began his law enforcement career on November 22, 1950, when he joined the Corpus Christi Police Department as an officer in the Patrol Division. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1960 where he served in the Patrol, Vice/Narcotic, and Criminal Investigation Divisions. In 1971, Commander Tackett was granted a leave of absence from the City of Corpus Christi and enrolled at Sam Houston State University. Commander Tackett obtained his Bachelor of Science degree and graduated with honors (Cum Laude) on May 13, 1972. Charles W. Tackett returned to his alma mater in the fall semester of 1973 as Director of the Department of Public Safety/Services. His association with Sam Houston State University spanned the presidencies of Dr. Elliott T. Bowers, Dr. Martin J. Anisman, Dr. Bobby K. Marks, and Dr. James F. Gaertner. He served with distinction as a member of the University staff and brought forth honor to the school and reflected a rare personal dedication with his exceptional performance as a mentor, friend, and confidant to generations of young men and women. Chief Tackett officially retired from Sam Houston State University on November 1, 2005 and he was designated the title of “Chief Emeritus”. Chief Charles W. Tackett passed away on September 23, 2014 at the age of 86.
