David and Grettle Payne Endowed Music Scholarship
After 14 years of service to Sam Houston State University, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs David Payne retired on July 31, 2011. Provost Payne established a strong, objective academic culture that continues to raise the bar on the quality of the programs and services at Sam Houston State University. His expectation for quality benefits our students. After positions at the University of Iowa, University of North Dakota, University of New Orleans, Southeast Missouri State University, Sangamon State University, and Emporia State University, he came to SHSU and accomplished many things. Grettle graduated from high school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Her undergraduate music degree is from Brigham Young University. She taught general music and produced five musicals in Brookline, Massachusetts and Salt Lake City. While in Boston, she sang in the Chorus for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which also performed with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The Payne family received the Kansas Kiwanis Family of Builders award for both parents and children ‘s contributions to their community. Along with her family, she is active in tire Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she has served as president of the children’s, youth, and ladies auxiliaries. David and Grettle ’s greatest joy is the family they raised: six children scattered from coast to coast and their 11 grandchildren (so far).
