Mozelle Powell Spanish Endowed Scholarship
Miss Mozelle Powell taught in the public schools of Texas from 1934-1962 and was a member of the faculty at Sam Houston State University from 1962-1977. Miss Powell received a Ford Foundation Fellowship in 1952 for travel and study of Spanish and Hispanic culture in Mexico and Guatemala. She served as an interpreter for American firms in Costa Rico in 1959, attended the NDEA Language Institute in Colorado in 1961, the Mexican Field School in 1966, and taught English as a foreign language in Pueblo, Mexico in 1976. Dr. Staggs taught at SHSU for 34 years and was instrumental in transforming the education department at SHSU. This endowment was established by Dr. Jack Staggs in memory of Mozelle Powell.
