David G. Moorman Agricultural Endowed Scholarship

The David G. Moorman Agricultural Endowed Scholarship is established by the honoree’s children, David W. Moorman and Leigh A. Dye, and friends, family, co-workers, and former students of David G. Moorman. Dr. David Garner Moorman lived in the town of Big Sandy, Texas until he moved at the age of thirteen near family members that were farmers. Upon graduating from Waco High School, David attended Texas Tech where he met and married Georgia Jane Guthrie. He would later earn his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics with a minor in Economics from Texas A&M. David worked on a commercial farm while receiving his master’s. The owner sparked his interest in learning about genetics and how the quality of plants could be improved via crossing characteristics. David would go on to work at West Texas State University, Texas Tech University, and Sam Houston State University. He served as the SHSU Chairman of the Department of Agricultural Sciences for 13 years and served on the SHSU Faculty Senate.
He was the Secretary and President of the National Association State Colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AASCARR). In addition, he served as secretary of the Agricultural Consortium of Texas and was the Chair of the National FFA Agricultural Sales Career Development Event. David and (Georgia) Jane believed in the importance of the opportunity for a university education. They instilled the concept that learning is a lifelong process. David and Georgia Jane purchased a farm and continued to learn and improve in Agricultural practices in West Texas. Leigh Ann and David Wayne would like to honor their father by establishing this scholarship in David Garner Moorman ’s name.
