John Von Neumann Endowed Scholarship Award
The John Von Neumann Endowed Scholarship Award was established in 1985 in honor of Dr. John Von Neumann by Dr. Robert E. Goad, professor of mathematics at Sam Houston State University. Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1903, Dr. Von Neumann was one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century, recognized as a genius at the age of 6. Dr. Von Neumann received his degree in chemical engineering and his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Budapest. Applying his application of computers to applied mathematics, Von Neumann developed the first electronic digital computer built by the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at Princeton University where he served as a professor of mathematics from 1930 until he surrendered his battle with cancer in February 1957. It is the Donor’s intent for the endowment to provide one or more annual scholarship awards to be announced in the spring and disbursed the following academic year, half in the fall and the remaining half in the spring semester. Scholarship awards shall not exceed the earnings of the endowment. This scholarship was established to assist with education expenses.
