Dixie Meyers Accounting Endowed Scholarship

Dixie Meyers’ commitment to educational excellence and desire to see her son obtain a college education were the most significant factors in his decision to go to college. Even though she herself never attended college, her advice to her son was attend college and get a degree. Walter remembered working construction jobs during the summer and telling her that he was making more money as a construction worker than he would make with his accounting degree. She would always reply, “Do you really want to be working out in this heat when you’re 50?” Thanks to his mother’s sound advice he went on to graduate from SHSU in 1979, the first in his family to do so, and was named an outstanding senior accounting student. This endowment was established by Walter Fitzgerald in memory of his mother, Dixie Meyers.
