Dr. Mary E. Gutermuth Endowed Scholarship

The Dr. Mary E. Gutermuth Endowed Scholarship was established on behalf of the Estate of Mary Elizabeth Gutermuth in her memory. Mary Elizabeth Gutermuth was born in Columbia, Missouri, on August 27, 1938, during the Great Depression. Like so many of her generation, she was marked by that experience with a strong work ethic and an inclination to help others. She received her BS and MA in French from the University of Missouri, along with her PhD after studying at the Sorbonne in France. Dr. Gutermuth taught French at the University of Missouri, Oberlin College and Loyola University, and later began her career at Sam Houston State University. She was Associate Professor of Foreign Languages from 1967 to 1982 and full Professor of Foreign Languages for 25 years: 1982-2007. In 2014, Dr. Gutermuth was named Professor Emerita. Dr. Gutermuth loved to travel across the Americas, Europe and Africa. Her ebullient personality and generosity of spirit endeared her to everyone who knew her.
