Victor E. and Judith Sower Scholarship

Dr. Sower. Distinguished Professor Emeritus, taught at Sam Houston State University from 1990 through 2008. lie is a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality and is certified as a Quality Engineer. He also is a member of APICS, the Academy of Management. DSI, ISM, ACS, AIChE, SWAM and other professional organizations. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. an M.B.A. from Auburn University, and a Ph.D. in Operations Management from the University of North Texas. Dr. Sower is the author or co-author of four books, 25 articles in refereed journals. 29 articles in refereed conference proceedings, and numerous presentations. He was the 1996 recipient of the SHSU Excellence in Teaching Award, the 2001 recipient of the SHSU Excellence in Research Award, and the 2008 recipient of the SHSU Excellence in Service Award. He was named a 2005 Piper Professor by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation. In addition to his academic experience, he has over 18 years of experience in process engineering. engineering management, and general management of a manufacturing operation. He is also an active consultant in the quality management, health care management, and innovation and technology fields. He served two years as an officer in the Army during the Vietnam era.

Judith Sower taught at Sam Houston State University in the College of Education’s Department of Language, Literacy, and Special Populations from 1998 through 2008. After 111’0 years as Master Teacher in Residence, she ,vas a lecturer in this department teaching in the Early Childhood Program and in the Special Education Program areas. She is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the Sam Houston Association for the Education of Young Children. During her tenure as President of SHA EYC, she received a grant from the Huntsville Arts Commission. She earned her B.S. (cum laude) from Auburn University in 1980, and a M. Ed. from Texas Woman ’s University in 1987. Judith Sower is co-author of two books, two papers, and has made many presentations at conferences. For 18 years prior to coming to Sam Houston, Judith taught in Texas public schools. During her twelve years experience in Birdville ISD in Fort Worth as a special education teacher, she was named district teacher of the year for the school year 1986-87. In 1992 she also received grants for innovative teaching ideas from General Dynamics Corporation and the Fort Worth Star Telegram Class Acts. After moving to Huntsville in 1992, she taught regular education in Huntsville !SD. During her time there, she received a grant from Southwestern Bell Corporation several small grants from the Huntsville Foundation, and was named 1995 teacher oft he year at Scott Johnson Elementary.
