Charles M. Friel Endowed Scholarship

The Charles M. Friel Scholarship was established by the College of Criminal Justice in honor of Dr. Charles M. Friel, Dean of the College of Criminal Justice from 1986 to 1991. Dr. Friel came to Sam Houston in 1967 and officially retired in 2005. He has touched the lives of virtually every student in the College of Criminal Justice that attended during that time frame and has always been available for his students to write a letter of recommendation, give advice, or whatever assistance was needed. He keeps a list of all the students he has ever taught and is always excited when he hears of his former students’ achievements. He is a major contributor to the history of our college and the national recognition the college has acquired. It is the Donor’s intent for the endowment to provide one or more annual scholarship awards to be announced in the spring and disbursed the following academic year, half in the fall and the remaining half in the spring semester. This scholarship was established to assist with education expenses.
