Wood-Mathews Endowed Scholarship

Mae Oxsheer attended Sam Houston Normal Institution and graduated with her teaching degree in 1914. Mae Oxsheer wood moved to Houston and taught in the Houston Public School system over 45 years. William M. Mathews was reared in Hawkinsville, Pulaski County, Georgia. Although he only attended school through the 5th grade, he assisted his three brothers and one sister to attain college degrees. At the time of his retirement, William had worked his way from messenger to Vice President of the Railway Express Agency. This endowment was established by Mae’s sister and William’s daughter in memory of Mae O. Wood and William M. Mathews
