Tom Skains Endowed Scholarship for Lead Trumpet in Honor of David Caffey and the SHSU "Catabiando" Jazz Ensemble

This scholarship is being established by Thomas “Tom” Skains, in honor of David Caffey, an internationally recognized composer, arranger, conductor, and educator. Tom graduated from Sam Houston State University magma cum laude in 1978 with a bachelors degree in business administration and a minor in music. He graduated again in 1981 from University of Houston cum laude with a Doctor of Jurisprudence law degree. During his junior and senior years at Sam Houston (‘76-’78), Tom played lead trumpet with the SHSU Jazz Ensemble under the director of David Caffey.

A recipient must (1) be a full-time or part-time undergraduate taking a minimum of 9 semester credit hours or a graduate student taking a minimum of 6 semester credit hours, in good standing and enrolled at Sam Houston State University; (2) be majoring in any discipline, (3) have and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0; incoming freshman applicants must have a minimum SAT score of 1200 or a minimum ACT score of 24; and (4) be chosen as the lead trumpet chair in the SHSU Jazz Ensemble at auditions. Financial need will not be a determining factor. This scholarship is a one-semester award. A recipient may receive this scholarship in subsequent semesters, but must audition each semester and be selected as the best candidate.
