Lynn Ray Smith Memorial History Endowed Scholarship
This endowment is being established in memory of the Donor’s brother, Lynn Ray Smith. Lynn Ray grew up in Pennington, Texas and attended Pennington High School, graduating in 1956, and attended Lamar Tech College in Beaumont on a basketball scholarship. He then followed in his father’s and sister’s footsteps, which led him to Sam Houston State Teachers College. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a minor in History in 1960 from Sam Houston State Teachers College and a Master of Education from Stephen F. Austin College in 1963. Lynn Ray taught school and coached in the Beaumont area for several years until returning to Trinity County to coach and teach at Centerville School. In 1966 he received a scholarship to attend summer school in Arizona and while there, he married Marie Long from Grapeland, Texas on Aug 13, 1966. Upon returning to Texas they both taught at Centerville for several years until organizing and operating National Treasures Hunters League as well as the Jack Long Insurance Agency until his passing.
A recipient must (1) be a full-time undergraduate student, in good standing and enrolled at Sam Houston State University; (2) be majoring in history; and (3) have and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0
