Mervin Smith Memorial Education Endowed Scholarship

This endowment is being established in memory of Mervin Smith, the Donor’s father. Mervin Smith was born on February 24, 1911 to Uann Smith and Lula Ainsworth Smith in Groveton, Texas. Mervin attended high school in Nogalus Prairie which is located in Trinity County. He subsequently attended Tyler Commercial College graduating in 1928 with the intent of becoming a banker. Mervin then began teaching school in Trinity County while attending Sam Houston State Teachers College (SHSTC) during the summer until he graduated in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Social Science with a minor in business administration. Mervin continued his education at SHSTC earning his Masters of Arts in education, graduating in 1947. Mervin went on to teach in Lufkin and later become the Superintendent and coach in Pennington.
