Alvin Lockhart Bass Trombone Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was created in memory of Alvin A. Lockhart. “My life-long friendship with Alvin Lockhart began my first week at Sam. Everyone knew who he was one of Houston’s finest bass trombonists, especially in the jazz genre. That was Alvin Lockhart. He was a fine bass trombonist for sure, but also a true friend who showed great kindness and empathy towards all others, and was a loving husband and father to his family.” -Laney Furr
Laney Furr graduated from Sam Houston State University with an undergraduate degree in music literature, studying with Dr. Harry Mallard. He also played in the Symphonic Band and Houstonian Jazz Ensemble every year until he graduated in 1976. The Alvin Lockhart Bass Trombone Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of Alvin Lockhart to provide financial assistance to selected students who have meet the criteria.
