Betty Elvin Memorial Scholarship in Education

The Betty Elvin Memorial Scholarship in Education honors the legacy of Betty Elvin, an enthusiastic educator of young people and a passionate believer in life-long learning. Mrs. Elvin began teaching in 1957 in Iowa public schools. After 9 years of teaching, Mrs. Elvin attended Sam Houston State University where she earned a Masters of Education degree in 1967. She returned to Iowa for one year and then moved to Huntsville where she taught at several schools in the area for more than 30 years. Mrs. Elvin loved to teach earth science, environmental science, and physical science. She wrote much of the curriculum she used in her classes because, at the time she taught, the concept of experiential learning was just beginning. The scholarship is sponsored by her children, Brian Elvin, Julie Elvin Gibbs, Connie Elvin, and Kris Elvin Godfrey. Mrs. Elvin encouraged all her children to excel in their chosen fields and never stop learning. Her children all attended college and have successful careers in business or academia.
